Building Codes
Building codes are rules that govern construction.
There are two main code bodies; the IBC (International Building Code) and the IRC (International Residential Code).
City governments adopt building codes, and permit departments administer and enforce them.
Building codes evolve over time to increase safety, address the use of new materials, new construction methods and technologies, or as a response to tragedies.
